Dario’s ballpark for painting a typical kitchen’s cabinets is $1,500 to $3,000, paint included, and $250 to $500 for a bathroom vanity. Those are the numbers on his price tool, and the written price comes after a free visit. National cost guides run wider: Fixr puts most kitchens at $2,500 to $6,500, HomeAdvisor at $425 to $1,466 and This Old House at $900 to $3,500. This guide shows both, what moves the price, and how painting compares with refacing and replacing. Dario’s Ballpark for Cabinets

Dario’s price tool gives a ballpark in about 30 seconds. Tap the kitchen, add any bathroom vanities, and it shows a range: about $1,500 to $3,000 for a typical sprayed kitchen and $250 to $500 for each bathroom vanity, with paint included.

Those ranges run a little on the low side on purpose. The exact price comes in writing after the free visit, and it can land a bit above a range when the cabinets need more prep. Dario looks at the cabinets with you, then writes up the doors, drawers, boxes, prep, coats and days line by line, with a start day and an end day. The estimate is free and yours to keep. The sections below show what moves the number.

National Cabinet Painting Prices

Published cost guides disagree about cabinet painting because they count different jobs. HomeAdvisor puts the average at $942, with a range of $425 to $1,466. This Old House lists $900 to $3,500 for a whole kitchen. Fixr’s average is $4,000, with most kitchens at $2,500 to $6,500, and it says an oversized kitchen with a complex layout or an island can pass $10,000. They also give per-unit prices: Fixr says $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front, and Fixr and HomeAdvisor both price cabinets at about $3 to $10 per square foot.

Painting a kitchen’s cabinets, by size

Fixr sizes a kitchen by its cabinet surface area: small is 70 to 100 sq ft, medium 100 to 200 and large over 200.

    :
    • $1,000–$3,500
  • Medium kitchen

    • $3,500–$7,000
  • Large kitchen

    :
    • $5,000–$10,000 or more

You will also see this job priced as cabinet refinishing. HomeAdvisor’s refinishing guide gives $1,992 to $4,495, with an average of $3,117, and Fixr gives $2,000 to $4,500 for a standard kitchen. Those guides include stained finishes as well as painted ones, and Fixr says refinishing suits solid wood or some plywood cabinets. At Dario’s Painting, refinishing means painting: see cabinet painting and refinishing in Memphis for the steps.

What Moves the Price

Most of a cabinet painting price is labor, so anything that adds surfaces or prep adds to the number. Here is what moves it.

Cabinet doors painted white, laid flat on sawhorses in a clean workshop
  • Doors and drawer fronts

The count drives most of the price, because each door and drawer front is prepped and sprayed on its own. Fixr prices them at $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front.

  • Size, islands and layout

Fixr puts a small kitchen at $1,000 to $3,500 and a large one at $5,000 to $10,000 or more. Islands, pantries, open layouts and decorative door panels add labor. Dario paints an island with the rest of the kitchen, to match or in a color of its own.

  • Condition and repairs

A peeling finish, water damage under the sink or an old paint job that is failing all add prep. Fixr puts fixing scratches and dents at $150 to $500, mostly on solid wood, and HomeAdvisor puts repairs before painting at $140 to $500.

  • Grease and prep

Cabinets near the stove carry years of cooking grease, and paint will not bond to it. Cleaning, sanding and priming are most of the job, which is why about 85% of the price is labor.

  • Color change

Going from dark wood to white takes more coverage than a light-to-light change. Fixr says light colors can need more coats or primer to hide wood grain and knots.

  • Oak and open grain

Open-grain wood like oak shows its grain through paint unless the grain is filled, which is extra work. Tell Dario at the visit whether you want the grain to show.

  • Spraying or brushing

Dario sprays. HomeAdvisor gives one range for both methods. Fixr says brushing typically costs more than spraying, because spraying applies faster even though it takes longer to prep.

  • Hardware and the insides

New hinges and pulls add $100 to $1,000 or more in Fixr’s guide, so say at the visit whether you are keeping yours. Painting the inside of the cabinets as well as the outside adds surfaces.

Painting vs Refacing vs Replacing

If you are searching for cabinet refacing, you are choosing between three jobs. Painting changes the color and finish and keeps your doors and boxes. Refacing puts new doors and drawer fronts on the existing boxes, with new veneer over them. Replacing means new cabinets. Dario paints cabinets; refacing and replacing are other trades, so the numbers below are here to help you compare, not to quote.

Painting vs refacing vs replacing kitchen cabinets

HomeAdvisor gives no range for replacing; its refacing page says new cabinets can run $10,000 or more.

  • Paint

    .
    • Fixr: $2,500–$6,500
    • HomeAdvisor: $425–$1,466
  • Reface

    • Fixr: $3,000–$13,500
    • HomeAdvisor: $4,234–$10,226
  • Replace

    .
    • Fixr: $4,000–$14,000

HomeAdvisor says refacing costs 30% to 50% less than replacing. Painting is usually the least expensive of the three because you keep the doors and the boxes, though the ranges overlap and the guides disagree, so a written price for your own kitchen beats any average.

What each job keeps, and how long it takes
Paint Reface Replace
What you keep The doors and the boxes. The boxes. Nothing; it is all new.
Share of the price that is labor About 85% (Fixr). 50% to 70% (Fixr). 30% to 50% (Fixr).
Time Typically 4 to 5 days for a pro crew on an average kitchen (Fixr). About 3 to 5 days once work begins; up to about 3 weeks counting measuring and ordering (Fixr). 1 to 3 days to install; custom cabinets take 6 to 12 weeks to build (Fixr).
Good fit when The boxes and doors are solid and the layout works. The boxes are sound and you want new door styles. The boxes are damaged, or the layout has to change.

Paint is the cheaper fix when the boxes and doors are solid, the layout works and what you mostly want is a new color. Many Memphis kitchens have solid wood cabinets that are sound but dated, and those are good candidates.

Paint is not the fix when the boxes are swollen from a leak, the doors are warped or falling apart, or you want a different layout. Laminate or thermofoil that is peeling or bubbling is worth a look at the visit too, because paint cannot hold a surface that is coming off. If you want new door styles rather than a new color, that is refacing, and a cabinet company does it. Dario tells you at the visit which one your kitchen needs, even when the answer is not paint. How to Compare Cabinet Quotes

Line up the same things in every cabinet quote

  • How many doors, drawer fronts and boxes are counted, and whether the island is in.
  • Prep: cleaning, sanding, priming and any repairs.
  • Coats, the finish, and the paint named for each surface.
  • Whether the inside of the boxes is included.
  • Color change and grain: whether filling oak grain is in the price.
  • Hardware: whether your pulls and hinges stay or new ones are priced.
  • Start and end days.

Dario’s written estimate lists doors, drawers, boxes, prep, coats and days line by line, with a start day and an end day, so you can set it next to any other quote. More in our list of questions to ask a painter.

Got questions?

How much does cabinet painting cost in Memphis?

Dario’s price tool gives a ballpark of about $1,500 to $3,000 for a typical sprayed kitchen, paint included, and $250 to $500 per bathroom vanity. The written price comes after the free visit and can land a bit above a ballpark when the cabinets need more prep. National guides put a whole kitchen at $425 to $6,500: HomeAdvisor’s average is $942, This Old House lists $900 to $3,500, and Fixr’s average is $4,000, with most kitchens $2,500 to $6,500.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets per door?

Fixr puts painting at $70 to $125 per cabinet door and $30 to $110 per drawer front, nationally. HomeAdvisor and Fixr also price cabinets at about $3 to $10 per square foot. Those are national averages, not Dario’s prices; his written estimate lists doors, drawers, boxes, prep, coats and days line by line.

How much does it cost to paint a bathroom vanity?

Dario’s price tool gives a ballpark of $250 to $500 per bathroom vanity, paint included. The exact price is written after the free visit. Vanities are painted the same way as kitchen cabinets, on their own or with the kitchen.

Is painting cabinets cheaper than refacing or replacing them?

Usually. National guides put painting at $2,500 to $6,500 for most kitchens (Fixr), refacing at $3,000 to $13,500 (Fixr) or $4,234 to $10,226 (HomeAdvisor), and replacing at $4,000 to $14,000 (Fixr). HomeAdvisor says refacing costs 30% to 50% less than replacing. The ranges overlap and the guides disagree, so get a written price for your own kitchen. Dario paints cabinets; refacing and replacing are other trades.

Is cabinet refinishing priced the same as cabinet painting?

The guides price refinishing a little differently: HomeAdvisor gives $1,992 to $4,495 with an average of $3,117, and Fixr gives $2,000 to $4,500 for a standard kitchen. Their refinishing includes stained finishes as well as painted ones. At Dario’s Painting, refinishing means painting, and the price is whatever your written estimate says for your cabinets.

Why do cabinet painting prices vary so much?

Guides count different jobs. HomeAdvisor’s range for painting kitchen cabinets is $425 to $1,466, while Fixr’s is $2,500 to $6,500. The number of doors and drawer fronts, the size of the kitchen, an island, the condition of the old finish, grease, a color change and oak grain all move the price, and about 85% of it is labor. When you compare quotes, compare what each one includes.

Is paint included in Dario’s price?

Yes. The price tool’s ballpark includes paint, and the written estimate lists the coats and paint for each surface. Dario uses premium lines from Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore, matched to the surface.
