In short

Dario’s Painting does the carpentry a house needs around its paint: baseboards and casings replaced or installed, door frames, rotted exterior wood, porch trim and railing repairs, and small fixes before painting. New wood is caulked, primed and painted to match. This page is about replacing or installing the wood; if your trim is sound and only needs paint, see trim, door and baseboard painting. It is priced at the free on-site estimate. Visits are on weekdays from 11:30 to 1:30 and on Saturdays from 7am to 6pm.

What’s included

Trim and repair carpentry, done to be painted.

The estimate lists each piece, so you see what comes out and what goes in before work starts.

Baseboards

Damaged, water-stained or missing baseboards replaced, or new ones installed. Gaps are caulked, and the new boards are primed and painted.

Door and window casings

Split, loose or rotted casings cut out and replaced, with the corners fitted and nailed.

Door jambs and frames

Rotted or split jambs and frames replaced. For outside doors, see door frame rot repair.

Porch trim and railings

A loose or rotted railing piece, or soft porch trim, repaired or replaced.

Painting trim or replacing it: which page is yours?

Two jobs, one crew, and one written estimate when you need both.

The wood is sound

Scuffed baseboards, yellowed casings, doors that only need paint: that is trim, door and baseboard painting.

The wood is damaged, missing or new

Rot, splits, water damage, or trim you want added: that is this page. Paint does not fix a soft board, so the wood is replaced or installed first.

Both, which is most jobs

New pieces are caulked, primed and painted with the rest of the trim, on one written estimate.

Small carpentry repairs before a paint job.

New paint looks best on solid wood, so small repairs come first.

  • Loose or split trimA casing or baseboard that has pulled away or split is fixed or replaced.
  • One damaged sectionA water-stained or chewed-up length is cut out and a new piece fitted in, where the profile can be matched.
  • Soft board endsWood gone soft at the bottom of a casing or porch trim is cut back to solid wood and replaced.
  • Open joints and gapsGaps at corners and along the wall are filled and caulked, so the painted line is straight.
How it goes

From the damaged board to the last coat.

  1. The visit

Dario looks at the wood with you, presses on soft spots and measures. If a piece has to match, he tells you what he can match.

  2. The estimate

A written price for each piece, and for the painting if you want that too. It is free, it carries no obligation, and it is yours to keep.

  3. Take out the damaged wood

Floors and furniture are covered. Damaged pieces come out, or are cut out back to solid wood. If more damage turns up behind, you hear about it before anything extra is done.

  4. New pieces, cut to fit

New boards and trim pieces are cut to fit and nailed in place.

  5. Fill and caulk

Nail holes are filled and joints caulked, so the lines come out clean.

  6. Prime and paint

The new wood is primed, then painted to match the rest of the trim.

  7. The walkthrough

You walk it with Dario and point at anything that is not right. It is fixed before the job is called done.

A carpenter for Memphis houses, inside and out.

Humid air

Memphis air is humid for much of the year, and wood moves with it. Joints open and paint cracks along them, so new wood is caulked at the joints and primed.

Older houses

Older homes in Midtown and East Memphis can have trim profiles that are hard to find new. Dario tells you at the visit whether a piece can be matched or a whole run should be replaced.

Heavy rain

Storms drop a lot of rain at once. It sits on ledges and soaks into board ends, the first places outside wood goes soft.

Dry days for outside work

Primer, caulk and paint need dry weather, so outside work follows the forecast (see when to paint an exterior in Memphis). Inside work does not wait on the weather.

We do carpentry and trim work across Memphis, East Memphis and the rest of Shelby County, including Germantown, Collierville, Bartlett, Cordova, Arlington and Lakeland. See all the areas we paint.

What Dario does not do.

This is trim and repair carpentry, the kind that goes with a paint job. Dario does not do framing, additions, structural repairs, deck building, cabinets built from scratch or whole-house door packages. If rot or water damage has reached the framing, a wall or a ceiling, he tells you at the visit and will not paint over it. For walls and ceilings, see drywall and sheetrock repair. For tubs and showers, see bathroom repair.

Price

What carpentry work costs.

There is no price list for carpentry. Dario prices it at the free on-site estimate.

01

How many pieces

One cracked casing is a small job. New baseboards through a whole floor are a bigger one.

02

Matching and reach

A profile that has to match old woodwork, or outside wood up a ladder, takes more time.

03

What turns up

Rot can hide behind a board. Anything not visible at the visit is quoted separately, and nothing is done without your approval.

Getting the room or the outside painted too? The carpentry goes on the same written estimate as the paint.

Questions

Carpentry and trim questions.

Do you do carpentry in Memphis?

Yes: the trim and repair carpentry that goes with painting, from baseboards and door casings to rotted exterior wood and porch trim. New wood is caulked, primed and painted to match.

Can you replace baseboards?

Yes. Damaged baseboards are taken out and new ones fitted, or installed where a room has none, then caulked, primed and painted. To repaint baseboards that are in good shape, see trim, door and baseboard painting.

Can you replace a door frame?

Yes. Rotted or split frames, jambs and casings are replaced, and the new wood is painted to match. For exterior frames, see door frame rot repair. Dario does not hang whole-house door packages.

What is the difference between carpentry and trim painting?

Trim painting is for sound wood that needs paint. Carpentry is for wood that is damaged, missing or new: it is replaced or installed first, then painted. Most jobs are both, on one written estimate.

Do you build decks, cabinets or additions?

No. Dario does not do framing, additions, structural repairs, deck building or cabinets built from scratch. For cabinets or a deck you already have, see cabinet painting and deck staining.

Do I have to repaint the whole room?

No. New pieces are painted to match. Old paint beside new wood can look tired, so Dario tells you at the visit if a wider repaint would look better, and lists it separately.

How much does carpentry cost?

There is no price list. It is priced at the free on-site estimate, because it depends on how many pieces there are, how they have to be matched and how hard they are to reach.
