Outdoor wood takes the worst of the weather, so the prep matters even more here than inside: stain and paint only last on clean, dry wood.

Deck boards, rails and steps, cleaned first, then stained or painted and sealed.
Porch floors, posts and railings, as part of a bigger job or on their own.

Gray, weathered wood or old peeling stain and paint take more cleaning and prep.
A stain soaks in; a paint forms a film. They take different prep and different time.
On a deck, rails, balusters and steps take far longer than the flat boards.
Shrubs, vines and narrow side yards along a fence line take more work to get around and protect.
Sunlight turns bare wood gray. A stain with pigment in it protects the wood from the sun better than a clear finish does.
Fences in the shade and decks under trees grow mildew and green algae. It is cleaned off first; stain put over it traps it.
Wood that has just been washed or rained on needs time to dry before it will take stain evenly, so outdoor dates depend on the forecast.
New pressure-treated wood is often still wet from the treatment and usually needs to dry out before it takes stain. Dario can check the wood at the visit and tell you when it is ready.

Stain soaks into the wood, and the lighter ones let the grain show; paint sits on top as a film and covers it. Stain tends to wear away rather than peel, while paint can peel if moisture gets behind it. Dario can talk through which suits your wood at the visit.
