Worn walking paths
Stain wears first where people walk, at the stairs and the door. Bare gray strips are the sign.
Dario’s Painting stains and seals wood decks across Memphis and Shelby County: the boards, the railings and the steps. The deck is washed and left to dry, any rotted boards are pointed out, and the stain goes on, on a dry day. Dario writes every estimate, free and in writing.

Dario’s Painting stains and seals wood decks across Memphis and Shelby County: deck boards, railings and steps. The deck is washed, given time to dry and checked for rotted boards, then stained or painted on a dry day. A deck usually needs it when the boards have gone gray, water soaks in instead of beading up, or the stain has worn off the walking paths. National cost guides put deck staining at $550–$1,250; your price comes from the free written estimate. Estimate visits are on weekdays from 11:30 to 1:30 and on Saturdays from 7am to 6pm.
A deck shows it before a fence does, because it takes the weather and the foot traffic.
Stain wears first where people walk, at the stairs and the door. Bare gray strips are the sign.
Splash water on the boards. If it soaks in instead of beading up, the finish is gone.
Sunlight turns bare wood gray, and unprotected boards raise splinters.
Decks under trees grow mildew and algae. It is washed off first; stain put over it traps it.
A board that feels soft or crumbles is rot, not a stain problem. Dario points out any rotted or loose boards at the visit, so they can be fixed before staining.
Rails, balusters and steps take far longer than the flat boards. Say if you want them done too.
Feet, chairs and grills wear a finish off the walking paths first. Nobody walks on a fence.
A fence’s upright boards shed rain. A deck’s flat boards and the gaps between them hold it, so the wood stays wet longer.
Every deck board takes sun and rain on top, all day. Pigment in a stain blocks the sun; a clear finish has none.
Most people mean the same job: a finish that soaks into the wood and keeps water out. The real difference is color.
| Finish | What you see | How it wears | Restain about every |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear sealer | Clear or lightly tinted; the grain shows. | No pigment to block the sun, so the wood can still gray. | 1 to 2 years |
| Semi-transparent stain | Adds color while the grain still shows. | Soaks in, so it wears away rather than peels. | 2 to 3 years |
| Solid stain | Opaque like paint; hides the grain and flaws. | Gives the most sun and weather protection, but can peel if moisture gets behind it. | 3 to 5 years |
Intervals are from This Old House and Sherwin-Williams; the how to stain a fence or deck guide has the sources. Foot traffic and shade move them, so read them as ranges, not promises.
Dario paints decks and railings too. For deck boards, though, the USDA Forest Products Laboratory recommends finishes that soak in, because paint and solid-color stains are prone to peel; paint can do well on railings.
Yes, and then it gets brushed in. Spraying is only half the job.
A sprayer puts stain on a lot of boards fast. Then the stain is brushed in while it is still wet, so it soaks into the wood instead of pooling in the gaps or sitting on top. Railings and the spaces between boards get a brush anyway. Overspray is the catch: siding, plants and furniture near the deck have to be covered. If you want to know how your deck will be done, ask at the visit.
Dario walks the deck with you, checks the boards, rails and steps for gray wood, mildew, worn paths and soft boards, and talks through stain or paint.

The deck is washed, then given at least 24 to 48 hours of dry weather, longer when it is damp.
Dario points out any rotted or loose boards at the visit, so they can be fixed before staining. Anything extra that turns up is quoted separately, and nothing is done without your approval.
The stain or paint goes on, on a dry day. Rain moves outdoor dates, and you hear it from us first.
You walk the deck with Dario and point at anything that is not right. It is fixed before the job is called done.
Deck boards bake in a Memphis summer. Stain put on in direct midday sun dries too fast and goes blotchy, so stain in shade, between about 40°F and 90°F.
Memphis storms drop a lot of rain at once. Give the deck at least 24 to 48 hours of dry weather, then sprinkle water on it: if it soaks in, it is ready; if it beads up, wait.
A dry spell in fall or the calmer weeks of spring is the easiest time to schedule. Dates move with the forecast, and you hear it from us first.
New pressure-treated wood is often still wet from the treatment. Dario can check it at the visit.

A small landing and a big multi-board deck are different jobs.
They take far longer than the flat boards.
Gray wood and old peeling finish take more prep.
A stain soaks in; a paint forms a film. They take different prep and time.

Sherwin-Williams says plan on 2 to 3 years. This Old House puts clear finishes at 1 to 2, semi-transparent at 2 to 3 and solid at 3 to 5. Foot traffic wears a deck faster than a fence. Splash water on it: if it soaks in instead of beading, it is time. The how to stain a fence or deck guide has the sources.
For deck boards, stain is usually better: paint forms a film that can peel and chip, is slippery when wet and takes more prep to redo. Paint can do well on railings. Dario paints decks and railings too, and can talk through which suits yours at the visit.
Usually not. New pressure-treated wood is often still wet from the treatment and needs to dry out before it takes stain evenly. Sprinkle water on the boards: if it beads up, wait. Dario can check the wood at the visit.
Yes. Boards, rails and steps are cleaned and prepped, then stained or painted and sealed. Rails, balusters and steps take far longer than the flat boards, so tell Dario which parts you want and the written quote will list them.
